The truth about car alarms

I live next to a fairly busy street, and there are car alarms going off constantly outside of my apartment.

I've never been able to figure this out. I think it's probably been a good ten years since anybody took car alarms seriously, and probably even longer since a theft was shut down because of one.

People just don't care. When I hear an alarm go off, I want to walk in the opposite direction and never think about it again.

Actually, I want to walk over, kick the car, and then walk in the opposite direction, never to think about it again.

This makes me wonder what car alarm owners are thinking. Do they really believe that their alarms are making a difference?

Do they really think that their cars are safer, and that good-minded citizens will throw themselves in Harm's Way to save a car that's going off?

In order to better understand what drives these people, I threw together what I think must be

The car alarm owner's wet dream:

I was outside having a smoke at a shopping center today, admiring the brand new bmw parked accross the road. Then a car drove past, fairly fast and a bit close to the beamer. The rush of air was enough to set off the car alarm. Its no wonder people ignore the suckers :-)

Oh, how I wish I would've had an alarm on my geo prizm (shut up!). That way I could've beat to death the moron that tried to use a screwdriver to pry out my $99 CD player -- instead of just unscrewing the FOUR visible screws that held it in. All happened while I was asleep and the car was parked in the driveway.
