American jobs moving abroad

Like quite a few other American coders, I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about American coding jobs moving abroad.

I've toyed a bit with some ideas for posts on the subject, but have yet to arrive at an angle that would do a good job of expressing how I feel about it.

Fortunately, Richard Tallent has done a pretty damn good job of saying what I've been feeling. We would probably differ on a few points, but, overall, it's pretty close.

In about the 27th hour of a migraine that's been pestering me, this is very good news. It means that I can point to someone else's interesting take on the subject rather than writing my own.

Definitely worth a read. Richard brings up a few good points. His timing is good, too - Just when I thought he wasn't going to mention education... <boom> There it was.

Check it out.

reason.com has an article on the subject: http://www.reason.com/links/links073003.shtml Some people think that overseas "outsourcing" is just a "management fad."

I agree with both of you, and I don't think it makes anyone a Populist. NAFTA was a disaster for many; now tech is moving offshore. A scenario, factually plausible but most likely never to pass, would be a US full of megacorp employees, and the people who serve them food, do their laundry and teach their children. The "middle layer" (quotes used to indicate that I know it's not that simple) disappears for the most part.

Saw your post regarding outsourcing to India. Met with a potential client last week that doesn’t need my web design services, because he can have everything built in India, through a guy in Seattle. Took a look at the potential client’s last “Built in India” site and must say that it’s not quality that I would be losing to. Some solace in that. I feel rather conflicted about the whole issue, because I do like to see the Indians as a wall of democracy blocking the spread of conservative Islam and Chinese hegemony (Of course, I would feel even better about them if they would lose their lousy caste system. Rather disgusting, but then again so is all of the slavery in the gulf states and other parts of the Arab world. Then again, we have prison labor taking jobs in the states. Oh, to hell with it. Our whole damn species is still swimming in the mud we rose from. Rome is burning. Pass the marshmallows— as long as they aren’t poncy little friends of yours)
