Smarter people than myself talk consulting

It's only taken a few days, but there's a more complete picture of the consulting world out there now for the crazy among you who are interested in this way of life.

Mark Dunn basically wrote an entire post in the comments section for one my consulting posts. He offers good advice on lawyers and accountants. The only thing I'd argue about with him is that, as good as lawyers probably are for debt collection, the mafia is even better. If you're on a budget and just need to have a few legs broken, Tonya Harding is probably looking for work at the moment, so you might give her a try, too.

DonXML has posted some awesome advice on how to get contract work, and how to behave within the contractor universe after you get it - a sort of "Miss Manners" for nerds. In addition, he's put up a "Consultant Rate Worksheet" that will help you convert between consultant rates and full time employee salaries. These two posts came out of Don's relatively new “Grok This” feed which is his more freeform place of posting (rather than his purely technical blog). Good stuff.

I went to AngryCoder today and saw Jonathan Goodyear's article "Going Independent - Part 1 - Assessing Your Gumption." A week old (that's two years in internet time), but it was new to me

Some guy calls out John in the comments going by the name of HUMM? I can't even begin to fathom the insanity required to visit someone's website who you don't care for, reading their articles and call them an idiot.

I'm am personally jealous of John because he drops a lot of f-bombs in his posts. On weblogs.asp.net, I have to avoid the f-bombs so the internet police don't come and get me. I also try to avoid getting drunk and posting.

Anyways, I think the guy answered his own question on why John is more succesful than HUMMMMMMM???. HUMMMM? obviously has either a christmas tree or a menorah stuck up his butt. And it's in there way deep. He's probably a talented coder, but never really gets good consultant work because as people have pointed out, it's all about networking. With people.
