I heard Ingo Rammer talk about enabling comments on his own blog, and I think he had them enabled for about three minutes before he started getting trolls.

No good... No good at all.

Although I bet some pretty great flamewars would take place if Mr. Box got comments going :)

Right before PDC, I was seriously considering adding comments.

Then I saw the Gerald Bauer/XUL SPAMbot and decided I to let the trolls work out their demons on someone else's site.

I don't want to speak for Don, but I'm guessing that his views are challenged pretty regularly in hallways, reviews, discussions, email, conferences, etc...

I don't think Don should be throwing away the baby with the bath water. There is a lot of value in comments, I mean no one is giving up email even through it's nearly a wasteland.

That's true, but only in the halls of Microsoft. Which, as big as it is, is still a small representative of the people investing time in the area he is working in.

That being said, I'm sure that Don has enough contact with those people, or at least people who's opinion he values, outside of the walls of the beast of Redmond.

He should come to more nerd dinners and evangelize to those of us that don't properly grok Indigo yet. :)
