Four Times Tidbitten

Went to New York this weekend - something I'll definitely be writing about in the near future. Don't quite have the cycles to do so yet, but in the meantime, enjoy these tidbits four...

Tidbit One

A big, big thanks to Scott Mitchell for providing a link to my post on adding variable support to CSS using custom HTTP handlers in ASP.NET. I was really excited about that little bit of code, so I'm honored to see a link to it in a recent MSDN article by Scott.

Very kind.

Tidbit Two

DonXML talks about a subject near 'n dear to my heart: Self publishing.

This is something I've thought a lot about, as I've been working on two Neopoleon books in my "spare" time (one somewhat technical - the other not at all). One of my issues has been over whether or not self publishing would be a wise way to go.

I was thinking about selling these books as ebooks and dead-rainforest books. If someone bought either format, then I'd give a large discount on purchasing the other (I personally like to have both, but I might just be weird that way).

Anyway, good read if this is something you've wondered about. Although the distribution is most likely going to be significantly lower with a self published book, the margins look like they'd be quite a bit higher.

Interesting discussion.

Tidbit Three

I'm really glad I read this guy's blog, because it's where I learned about the PInvoke add-in for VS.NET.

What a freaking fabulous idea.

Tidbit Four

My friend, homeboy, and staple member of the .NET Rocks studio audience, Joe Grenier, has set up a blog, and I wanted to get him a nice shout out. If we winds up being half as interesting on his blog as he is in person, then this ought to be good (no pressure or anything, Joe).

After Blog Mint [?] :

David Czarnecki has added the After Blog Mint to his blogging template. Pretty nifty, man :)

Yea, that guy has a nice blog.

Good luck with the ebooks, that is definitely the way to go (if you went to a Publisher they wouldn't even look at it, you must have an agent). Your audience is here in blogville, they will download your ebook and will quickly let you know if its crap or not.

I can't say much in way of self publishing, because it's as much a crap shoot as anything else. I went ahead with iUniverse that handles all things, including the print-on-demand processing, and at the time their package was $449. An eBook version was an additional $99 and I didn't much want to do that for a few reasons. I have no issues giving away software that I wrote and maintain for free, and the posted blog entries for free, but once I take the time to edit, polish and publish something in a book form, I'd at least like 2-bits for it...

Having said that, it will take years (and many of them) to get back that invest cash from the current rate of book sales, which leads me to believe that my work is indeed crap :)
