Bob gives it away

If you never got a chance to read Coding Slave because you couldn’t afford it (or because you were just too damned cheap to shell out the $12.95), now’s your chance to download the book for free.

Bob Reselman is giving it away.

If you’re new to Bob, and if you’ve ever wondered why it is that I like this guy so much, then you ought to check out this episode of .NET Rocks. Easily one of my favorites, and also one of the most downloaded shows, getting to interview Bob with Carl was a thrill…

I was kinda annoyed after paying $12.95 for Coding Slave, but for free, it's a no-brainer. I can pretty much guarantee it's not like any other IT related book you've ever read.. ever. EVER.

yikes - just finished that - it sucks. Not worth an MB of the space it takes on the disk.

I just finished reading it too. I'm not sure what I think. I'd like to say nice things, because it provokes thought.. but my strongest 'feeling' about the work as a whole is that it's base, perverted, misguided, and simplistic.

I found a cool Socrates quote in the Appendix though!

John.

"Man, I do not understand what you want, or know what you are saying"

Um. Whoah.

That's, uh, some great feedback.

I'm sure Bob will appreciate it.

That's something I love about it. I spent a lot of time turning some of the ideas over in my head.

Whether I agreed with them or not, it helped me to clarify my own position on some topics related to software development.

"but my strongest 'feeling' about the work as a whole is that it's base, perverted, misguided, and simplistic."

The "perverted" comment was one of the common complaints back when the book came out. I always felt that the sex was there for a reason, though - not just for sex.

There were quite a few metaphors that could be applied to it. For example, I've been in *many* meetings where it seemed to me that nothing of any use was being accomplished, but instead, where people were just "f*cking around."

It's also useful to chat with Bob about it. Everything in that book is there for a reason :)

Hi, just listened to the .net rocks show and found it quite interesting to hear people in this industry speak about the things I find interesting in the closet so to speak. While I'm not sure I agree with every thing that was said I enjoy a good polemic. For instance I’m pretty sure that what Chomsky was referring to with the sports thread is that while people can only think about one thing at a time they also are generally compelled to think about something most of the time. And so it is a political tool to occupy people’s minds with things of little consequence lest the people become politically aware and challenge the powers that have the most to gain from a tacit consent. The amount of thought and processing that is necessary to understand or for that matter find interesting in the least, baseball is considerable. This speaks to the sentiment that 9 out of 10 people are blithering idiots. Well, it may, I repeat may, be the case that there not devoid of intelligence it’s just that they use there brains on things that hold no intrinsic or political value for themselves at all.
My 3 ½ cents

I just finished the Coding Slave and I have to say that I was pretty shocked. I think I might have missed any points made by the author due number of erections found in the text.

It was like there was some message in there but it kind of got lost by images of Ajita.

Maybe I'm just too conservative or too easily aroused, but I just couldn't get past all the sex.

Sex.

I think I'll have to re-write my own version of the coding slave so I can focus on the words being said towards the end (I think the speech Ajita was giving Albert had some good points in it but once again I got lost in the anticipation of a potential sexual escapade)

Man, my head is all messed up now from that book. Kind of depressing in parts, arousing in others, and somewhere had some message and purpose. So I guess overall it did its job. I'm pretty sure somewhere in my mess of a brain are some kernels of thoughts (other than Ajita and the board room meeting) that the book provoked.

The guild, is it a good idea or a bad idea? I’m not sure, but I think I might be horny.

I do hope and dream of the day when developers become more professional and we lose the current stereotype and image.

Between the coding slave and your pictures of Aydika's breasts your becoming quite the porn king here Rory! When do you start charging my credit card to take off YOUR clothes?

Now I just need someone else to read the book so I can have an outlet for discussion.

I believe that there is something wrong with my browser. In the post by George he mentions pics of Aydika and Rory's breasts pressed togeather in a sweaty steamy embrase and it doesn't seem to be coming through on my version. Perhaps I need to view it using IE.

Frankly, I think this had the chance to be a great book - but just got mired in too much weirdness. I swear...I was half-expecting Ajita to strip in front of the crowd or something in the end.

Then of course, maybe there's some deeper story line and philosophy that I have failed to grok. But you cant blame me - I was just too confused from all the masturbation, various forms of sex, etc, etc.

Sorry Bob - good on ya for making the book free to download. Just wanted to give you some honest feedback.

Here is my commentary on the sex in Coding Slave.

http://codingslave.blogspot.com/2005/03/q-what-is-sex.html

The essay is titled: Q: What is Sex.

Find it interesting that episodes in which sexual activity was prominent raised more comments than the episodes in which death was prominent.

I wonder why nobody commented on or question why the Project Manager does not have a name.

There is a lot more there, if you look very closely. Did anybody notice a pattern in the first sentence in of the first paragraph of each chapter as the chapter relates to the Part?

Here are some more questions to ponder:

What is the significance of Ajita feeding Rafael in Chapter 25?

Why did Rafael let go during the plane crash?

What is the relationship between the coders, kid on the cruise, the Physicians in the platonic dialog that ships with the book and Meno?

Where did Walt want to live?

Why did Walt walk away from Connie?

Why would Katherine want to recruite coders in the San Fernando valley?

What is the relationship between sex and coding, as alluded to in the book?

What chapters are musical?

I have more questions that can help offer insight into the book.

I will be honored to provide answers, as best that I can.
