A New Holiday

It’s the fourth of July, and I’ve been thinking a lot about all this “Independence Day” stuff.

Currently, the United States has three (3) real exports:

1) PhD’s

2) Money

3) Jobs

At the moment, I don’t feel like we’re all that “independent.”

In light of this, I’d like to suggest that we rename the holiday to “Codependence Day” until we can get our buttocks in gear and do it to it again.

I feel like our country is in its mid-90s Apple Computer phase. The stock is down, people don’t really want our products, and the wrong people are in charge.

Anyway, Apple pulled out of it. I’m sure we can too.

Steve Jobs for president, yo.

Au contraire, if you're doing all the exporting (being the world's no. 1 source of PhD's, Money and Jobs) doesn't that make you the independent wealthy landlord, generously and benevolently doling out edumacation and moolah to the rest of the peasant world?

Doesn't sound too codependant to me...

I might have misread, though...

I was actually thinking of the highly educated types who are taking off for places where they can engage research that they can't do here (certain stem cell research, etc.).

As for the dough - I mean that we're bleeding jobs, and dough's going with 'em.

I'm not being entirely serious.

(*entirely*)

Ruby, 5, asked yesterday what Independence Day was. "That's when the people of earth fought the aliens and won our freedom," I replied.

April's still trying to explain that space aliens had nothing to do with it, but probably for the rest of her life Ruby will think, deep down, that there are aliens somewhere in the story.

I love being a parent.

That was beautiful.

I just finished convulsing. One of the funniest things I've read in a while.

Yes, Steve Jobs for President. Let's make a product, show annoying commercials of it on every TV station, then charge the world excessive amounts of money, thereby making us 'cool' and rich once again. Yay!

Although we do get loads of foreign students in our universities who go back to their home countries (exporting PhDs), it's also important to note that the US is the chief beneficiary of a global brain drain. The research insitutions and the American meritocracy are a powerful draw for the best and brightest from around the world. When I was in Germany, Gerhard Scheoder started a program to try and lure talented Germans back from the US. So, on the grand scheme of things, I think we could well be running a hefty surplus on the talent import/export question.

Funny. I always thought it was US' strength: Being able to pull in PhD's from abroad to let them make their research in US and take advantage of the results.

I have quite a few PhD friends who went to the States. But I never met a single american PhD in a belgian university !

So I'd put PhD's in the import column.

"So I'd put PhD's in the import column."

So would some SE Asian countries which are putting money into stem cell research that us 'Mericans can't do because of federal restrictions on funding.

It stinks.

Maybe the Belgians just stop here for the night on the way to someplace else...

Woohoo, iPods for everybody.

"You can have my iPod when you can pry it from my cold, dead hands"

Does that mean that Steve Wozniak gets to be VP?

How about Bill Gates for Secretary of Defense?
