London - Bad timing, but let's get together next week...

I was asked to speak at an educational conference on mobile technology [SLIDE5] in Reading, UK, and while planning my train trip from London to Reading this morning, saw a warning about the train schedule being disrupted by a terror alert.

Went straight to CNN and learned what most of you have as well by now.

Seems like a strange time, then, to mention that I’m going to be taking a few vacation days in London before the conference. I’ll be arriving on July 14th (Thursday) at about 6:00 AM, and I’m sure that I’ll be just fresh as a daisy when I step off the plane.

If anybody would like to get together for a nerd dinner in London anywhere from the 14th to the 17th, then leave a comment, and we can get something worked out.

Hell, if you just want to get together to walk around and talk about life (or Doctor Who (or how awesome Madonna’s Live8 performance was (or anything, really))), that’s cool, too.

Haven’t decided yet where I’m going to stay, but it will probably be someplace central (plus ou moins).

The only thing I have planned is a visit to the Boots inside the Gloucester mall (near the Gloucester Road tube stop) to buy an umbrella. I picked one up there in 1998, and it’s been the best umbrella I’ve ever owned. Although it still works, there’s enough wear on it that I can foresee the day it fails to give me that satisfying chunk…whoosh! deployment which results from an appropriate amount of pressure being placed on the very ergonomically friendly button located about 2/3 the way up the plastic handle. I’m not leaving without a second one of those beauties. No way.

So, yeah. Leave a comment if you’re interested. I’d love to meet you in person.

you may consider a B&B while in London. findmeabnb.co.uk is a good site or try the hydeparkradnor.com, which is central and clean.

Count me in. I know quite a few people who read your blog too who should be interested, but lets see how things go over the next few days - I live on Zone 1/Zone 2 border...

I'm up for it Rory.

And if you're REALLY bored and anywhere near Vauxhall tube station feel free to pop in and see the 'life size' dalek (complete with remote control for digital sounds and flashing lights - how sad is that!) (more info on the daleks can be found at www.thisplanetearth.co.uk)

Oops the above 'dalek' post is anonymous when it wasn't meant to be.

So, sounds like we have the beginnings of a night out.

anonymouse/Ian - Is there a particular night that would work well for you (provided you can go)?

Thursday night is spoken for, but Friday/Saturday/Sunday are all open...

I would definetly be interested in a "derd dinner". I am about for all of that weekend. Always happy to talk about geeky stuff, especially Doctor Who.

Rory,

Relatively new reader to Neopoleon. The idea of a Nerd Dinner with you and some fellow readers sounds awesome. Count me in :)

I feel I should also alert your attention to a shop near the british museum dedicated to Umbrellas. Its on the intersection of Bloomsbury St and either New Oxford St or Great Russell St. :)

Hey Rory - I'd be in for that.
Am happy with either of the three days...

A good site to try for cheap late-availability rooms is www.laterooms.co.uk...

Have you heard the radio-show clip (mp3) of the Tom Baker impersonator who rings the real Tom Baker up and pretends to be the Doctor? It's one of the funniest things...

Hi Rory, I'm a rather quiet reader of your blog, but I may well be interested depending on the night.
To be honest, I think some positive event is something us Londoners could well do with over the coming weeks :)

Hey I'm up for that. Any night's good for me.

Dammit! No! I have a life, honest*.

What I meant to say was:

Darn it Rory, why did you have to only give us a week's notice? I'm all booked up next weekend. Although, I guess I could shuffle some of my myriad appointments about and fit you in some time. Aren't I kind?

*May not be true.

What I wouldn't give, but I can't. I'll be in Europe the week after that. I read your blog religiously and wish that I could meet you. You are definitely the most intriguing person… that I've never met, but would love to meet... on second thought, I'd probably just stand there with my mouth open unable to speak to you, so it's probably best that I can't make it. You'd likely be uncomfortable by my constant staring at you and occasionally reaching over to pinch you, just to make sure I'm not emerged in some delusional fantasy!

We're very picky about umbrellas... let's face it, they're a vital part of our cultural heritage.

Oooooh, maybe you should make everyone bring an umbrella to the nerd dinner? You know, "no admittance without an umbrella", "pass the umbrella" games during dinner, "umbrella swap-meet" afterwards, contests for whose umbrella opens most violently/with most satisfying sound/with biggest expansion factor.

The possibilities are endless. And truly nerdy.

Friday, Saturday or Sunday are good for me. I'd bring Derek (the dalek) but he has trouble with the stairs outside my flat (not one of the "new series" models you see) ;-)
