The answer is: Yes - I know Gunderloy doesn't like my comics

A lot of people have been writing today to ask if I’ve seen Mike’s review of Joel’s book (the one in which one of my comics was published).

The answer is: Yes, I’ve seen it.

My response is: Who cares. I did the comic for fun. If Gunderloy feels cheated in any way, then he might have been expecting a completely different book, and it’s his Gunderloy-given right to hate my comics, so Gunderloy bless him for doing so. I used to hang out a lot in Chris Sells’ off topic yahoo group (where Gunderloy is a regular part of the conversation), and I’m used to his curmudgeonry.

If I had a dollar for every time somebody thought I stank, then I’d be in the stinkin’ business, and I’d be rich. But I don’t, and I’m not. There will always be people who think you stink.

And I still read Gunderloy’s site.

I’ll tell you what that guy needs, though – he needs a nice little Pollyanna to come skipping into his life. She just has a real knack for setting old grumpy codgers straight :)

Well if we all liked the same stuff this would be an incredibly boring place to live in.

I liked his review actually. I felt it was honest - which is not always the case as people start doing friends favours and trying to avoid pissing them off - and how often does someone who's opinionated admit that in their own reviews?

At the end of the day it would encourage me to buy the book (I already have it but am still working through the earlier "Joel on Software" so haven't got to it yet).

Cartoons, even more than words, are very much a personal thing so I wouldn't take offence. There are enough gathered here (like me) who get a real kick out of them (along with your witty writing) so you should feel secure in your popularity and "fan" base. If you were only getting bland affirmations from everyone THEN I'd be worried.

Pollyana? Um, I think he does have a wife and a couple of wee little ones also.

Pollyanna was the nice girl who came to town and melted all the hearts of stone, bringing the townfolk together and helping them realize all the joys inherent in being human.

I think the girl you're thinking of is Lolita.

Little different :)

Hey, look on the bright side. He lumped you in with Paul Graham. That's pretty good company. I wouldn't mind if someone told me they hated my writing as much as Paul Graham.

I just read his comments - it looks like he would've preferred a steady diet of people perpetrating Computer Science.
Yawwwwwwwn.

I do agree with him about Paul Graham though (I truly don't understand why everyone says how clever and insightful he is whenever he takes his ego for walkies).

No, I wouldn't have preferred a steady diet of computer science. I just think prospective buyers need to be aware of what Joel's definition of "best" is.

And by the way....saying that 50% of the pieces in an anthology are superior (as I did) is actually high praise. I can think of very few anthologies in any field that have anywhere near that batting average.

Even if I *am* too curmudgeonly to like Rory's comics.
