PDC 2005 - A strange request...

[Update: I’ve accepted a room. Thanks to everybody who wrote in :) ]

Dear Everybody,

I have a couple real posts coming (along with the podcast, which has been recorded and is ready to go), but first I have to take care of a little problem I have.

Here’s my problem.

I’m going to the PDC, but I don’t have a hotel room, and it looks like the nearest I can get is about as practical as flying in to the conference every day from Portland.

Is there anybody out there who got a room with two beds but only needs one of them (near the conference center)? I can, of course, pick up half the tab.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t snore.

Thanks,

– Rory

Heck, don't beg - raffle off this opportunity!

Or do some type of competition - I am certain you could get people to compete for this type of thing. :P

Hey Rory,

I have two doubles in my room at the Miyako (5 minute cab ride from PDC) so you're welcome to stay with me (I don't snore either although I'm usually asleep so I don't know for sure).

Contact me at bsimser@shaw.ca. I'm in L.A. for 7 days (Sun-Sun) during the conference.

Look - my ego's already going to need a spare bed of its own. Let's not make it worse by turning this into a contest ;)

Coming from the guy who just posted about doing the "half monty" on his weekend penis-camp testosterone getaway, I'm not sure if this is an offer or a threat :)

Look Rory, you're a guy who likes to learn about local culture. I really think this is shallow of you to try to find a hotel in Downtown LA. You need the "local" experience. I'm sure I can hook you up w/ a room at my supervisors house in Riverside (read roughly 60 miles, or 3 hours of parking lot grid lock on our "freeways.")

And while you're at it, since I'm giving you such a great opportunity you can pick my co-worker and I up on your way in, we're only about 30 miles out.

Crap. Does this mean I should have booked my hotel by now?

I never thought I would see this happen, but procrastinating seems to have finally come back to bite me.

Awesome that you're going, though!

I'm sure there's a hostel somewhere nearby. Perhaps you can get propositioned for some BANG BANG from a real 'Merican.

Sounds like a great opportunity to behold the remainder of the monty, though, eh?

Rory,

I've given it some thought, and it's been a difficult decision to make - please don't be angry.

I'm not ready for a physical relationship just yet.

I'm sure you're a swell guy and all, and some lucky person is going to hit the jackpot downtime with you that week, but I am not ready for that level of commitment.

It would be great if we could still be friends and that, in some ways, we can respect ourselves more by waiting. After that whole 'Devcon toilet thing' I just can't see you like that - it's just not the way I'm built.

Sorry.

I'm staying at the Wilshire Grand (which is where both of us stayed at the last PDC), and you can stay in my room. You'd just have to put up with some snoring (during what little time I do get to sleep at PDC).

Looks like you've got at least a couple of offers so hopefully are sorted but if you find things fall through I'm staying at Hilton Checkers on the Sunday night through to deparure the next Sunday (basically because friends in LA told me it was the only half-decent hotel anywhere near the convention centre in terms of getting a good nights sleep. Plus it's got wireless internet access. Woo hoo!).

Two big disadvantages to sharing with me: (1) I snore (2)I'm 'out' gay which will do your 'Rory is gay' reputation no good at all so best take one of those other offers first.

Of the other offers I've stayed at The Miyako and if the travel isn't a problem for you it's a good hotel. There are some pictures of it from when I stayed there a year or two ago over in my 'Lord of the Rings' blog at http://www.iansmith.co.uk/lotr/weblogs/July27.htm (and if you want to find out what the hotel restaurant is like click on the link to the next day's report at the bottom and read my account of a meal there at the bottom of the page).

Good luck and 'Have a great PDC'.

It's actually BANGY-BANGY.

I mean.

Not that I'd know.

Or that the difference would matter that much to me.

Or...

I'll stop talking now.

You haven't even taken me out to dinner yet, and you're already discussing BANGY-BANGY.

You need to learn a thing or two about the courting process, my friend.

Don't worry - Chris is already working hard (ha ha) on the "Rory is gay" reputation :)

Anyway, cool that you're going. I sense a big nerd outing coming up...

Chris Sells won the Week-With-Rory Contest. Ed McMahon is over there now with balloons and a special certificate of Winningship(TM).

My lawyer's there with them as well in case things get hairy and Chris tries to back out at the last minute.

My henchmen are also there just in case my lawyer proves ineffective.

Nerd outing or Nerd 'outing'? Whatever, I'm in!

GuyIncognito,
Thanks for the kind words about the blog. Alas my production work sounds REALLY dated these days - dance music has moved on a lot. Good times even though the main reason for the career change was that my partner was getting really sick and IT ain't no friend when you've got a dying partner needing chemotherapy every couple of weeks (the music industry is much better at coping with needed 'time out'). Oh yeah and the money sucks because even when you've got songwriting royalties the record companies seem to be very cavalier with the sales figures they produce.

Ian *is* a fabulous human being, and I plan on tagging along with him for bits of the conference, provided he allows me to do so :)

I'm actually very, very excited.

I miss Stuart.

I miss DonXML.

I miss Ian.

I miss Chris (even though he just lives on the other side of town).

I look forward as well to meeting all the other people that I'll eventually miss.

PDC is a good, good thing.

That'd be too easy.

"Who *doesn't* want to sleep with Rory" would be much more interesting and challenging.

There's no shortage of strange Brazillian men at my door who want the BANGY-BANGY.
