Video Tutorial - .NET CF

If you’re into the whole computer-programming-software-development-with-computers-programming thing, then you might be interested in a video tutorial I’ve posted over at TinyThings.

It’s an introduction to developing .NET CF apps using VS 2005 and the built-in emulators – in other words, creating a PocketPC (or SmartPhone) app without actually having to own the device.

If people like it, it’ll be the first in a series.

Check it out.

Rory,

I just checked it out. Very cool and would like to see more!

I've been developing Smartphone stuff for fun and so here's a couple of future episodes I'd like to see...

-Lets see a Smartphone 2003 version of this. Would be nice to focus on the menus and how they work. Also, I've seen lot's of devs have trouble with how to handle multi-form apps.

-Would also love to see demos with Windows Mobile 2005 emulators...PocketPC and Smartphone

-How about working with the emulators and Web Services. It's a little tricky to get everything working with the emulator.

Enough requests :) Anyway, thanks for a job well done. I'm the type of dev that likes seeing things being done on-screen. Cool.

Hey, John -

Glad you liked it :)

I'll be doing a SmartPhone tutorial soon, and, since you mentioned it, I'll make sure to cover the menus. When you think about it, I guess you couldn't really even do a meaningful SmartPhone app without 'em, so it's sort of a requirement. Glad you brought it up.

And, I'll *definitely* be doing 2005 stuff. First, though, I want to make sure I've laid a foundation for it.

Thanks for the comments :) Nice to hear...

What could be really nice is doing a demo on NTier development with the compact framework, showing the use of the business tier from a desktop app and a web app (using the assembly) and wrapping the business tier with a web service then using it from de pda.

Also, could you talk about architecture with these devices ? I see that I could do components for them, but what is the proper use... you can't call a component done with the CF from a .NET app.

Anyway... this video was really nice, professional... sort of ... and really fun!

Please keep it up!

Very nice!

Here is a suggestion, maybe not so much about a demo (though it would be cool too) but more hoping to know someone you can scream at (I mean speak with) about this.

Voice recognition and text-to-speech support on PocketPC!!!! MS Voice Command does a great job, but it seems they want to keep that secret and won't release this as an SDK or anything so other developers could leverage that ability in thier apps. grrrrrrr....

As it is I'm having to run my MSDN version of MS Speech Server with the speech add-in for Pocket IE. Of course this means I need to have a connection to my server, etc so only works around the house, which is fine since I'm just using it for home automation control but still! Developing a simple speech app on a PPC shouldn't require a piece of $8,000 server software!

Sorry, rant over ;-)

"Developers! Developers! Developers!" my foot, Balmer! (see above for what this is in reference to)

OK, this time I'm serious about the rant being over ;-)

Hey, I feel better! Rory, I can now see the appeal of a blog. Its amazing how cathartic a little online rant can be ;-)
