Technocentricity

Word, Brother Brian.

Enthusiasm is great. Zealotry is downright stupid and has nothing but a negative impact for people on all sides of the argument.

Read the man’s post.

Brian’s position is the best. That’s all there is to it.

Like him, I’m tired of the following modes of thought:

Likes Apple, so must hate Windows

Likes VB.NET, so much hate C# (and the other way around)

Likes Linux, so must hate Everything Else

Etc.

Someday I hope to understand the Thing One vs. Thing Two argument when the result is completely exclusive. In other words, I hope to understand zealotry.

It’s a position of hatred and obsession rather than of genuine love for technology (or whatever cause it is that you’re backing).

But I won’t go on too long about it. Brian has done a beautiful job of putting it all together.

He’s a good guy, Brian. He got drunk once and hugged me. That’s my kind of person.

I'll hug you. I'll get drunk with you. I'll hug you and get drunk with you. I'll even get you drunk and have you hug other people.

I'm easy.

I'll hug you sober, too. And I'll drink and hug. I'll also hug and drink. And I tend to do a lot of hugging after I've done a lot of drinking.

Next time I see you, it's a promise: Hugs, yo.

Pinkie-swear on it.

Hang out with me sometime, Mr. Bambrick.

I will learn you good the simple pleasure of a nice, friendly hug.

And, if that doesn't work, I'll punch you.

I am an equal opportunity tech hater. I hate some things about Windows, I hate some things about Linux, I hate some things about Macs. I think computers in general still pretty much suck for people. That's why I like being a developer. Hopefully I can make something that largely sucks, suck less for people, and in doing so make them a little happier.

I'm pretty sure I would not hug you unless you had some form of incureable disease that was not contagious and you had just told me about it.

Remember, a hug goes too far when you feel something poking your thigh. Friends don't let friends poke friends who don't like to be poked, especially while drunk.

Drunk hugging aside, I was more interested in other people's take on the whole technocentrism/zealotry issue. (e.g. looking forward to people's comments).

If it is a given that we are all wed to our technology of choice, how do we make value judgments on these issues? I have yet to find a general comparison of Windows versus Linux or Java versus .NET that isn't tainted by the writer's biases. If someone makes a claim that Windows is inherently insecure or that .NET is far superior to Java, I don't have an easy way to judge the technical merits of these statements.

I may have my own opinions and experiences on a subject, but I have no hard irrefutable facts to use in support of my argument, and usually neither does the person I am conversing with. Where then do we go for factual information that isn't dismissed out of hand by others as FUD?

It is hard sometimes for me to frame my ideas in a coherent manner, but here is a for example: Someone posts about an issue in a Microsoft product that has major privacy/security implications. The majority of posts I see are either "Drop Microsoft, Linux/OSS is the one true path", or "People are blowing this way out of proportion only because they hate Microsoft". I would rather see people say "This is an issue that needs to be addressed, and Microsoft can fix this by doing a, b, and c".

Zealots are more interested in tearing down the other side and proclaiming the superiority of their culture. Evangelists on the other hand are more interested in analyzing an issue and suggesting possible solutions, regardless of whether it happens to be 'their' technology.

The desire to provide constructive criticism and solutions instead of mindless rhetoric is for me what separates zealots from evangelists.

Me?

I hate Windows, but that predates my move to Mac. However all operating systems & computers suck. Some just suck in more bearable ways.

I hate VB.net, but that predates my usage of C#. (Which has lots of things I liked about VB, like the whole getting stuff done quickly, without the whole "EW YUCKY SYNTAX MAKE BRAIN GO BOOM" problem.) However this is offset by the fact that all programming languages suck. I prefer to use the one that angers me the least (which is Ruby right now.)

I don't hate linux (all my servers run it, quite happily) , but um, other than Windows :)

Yeah - I've always liked that about you.

'Course, it also makes you an equal opportunity tech *liker* - it's OK to admit it, yo :)

I'm not a fan of Macs, they are just not for me. I love PCs, and while I run Windows XP, I am interested in learning Linux, just to see what all the hoopla is about.
Yeah, I'm no zealot.
I don't know what VB.NET is because I'm not a developer, so I can't say I have an opinion on that.

I will gladly let you get drunk and give me hugs, and I'll probably return your hugs just to humor you. But it's not likely that I'll randomly get drunk and hug you... even if you poked me.

Crucible,

I updated my post after seeing what was going on at Tristan's blog. Am I the only one who thinks disfiguring a web application based on the browser a person is using is basically technological racism? "You are using Internet Explorer? We have a special web site for you kind of people."

What is with all the drunk hugging? You guys are, like, sooo so gay!

The whole reason I got into computers was to avoid all form of contact with other people. Stop ruining it for me with your crazy hugging! :P

p.s. Also, avoid direct eye contact.
