Comic - Hi. I'm a user, and I'm sick of these effing ads.

You know which ads I'm talking about.

Those god damned "Hi. I'm a Mac," ads.

If you haven't seen them, then... here. Check 'em out. I do you a disservice to expose you to the tardness of it all, but if you need context for this post, then context you shall have.

I have an idea for a fun Viral Video spoof ... just wish I had the time/resources to make it ...

Mac: Hi, I'm a Mac.
PC: And I'm a PC -- are you feeling alright?
Mac [sweating a little]: Oh me, I'm just fine, but what about you?
PC: Uh, I'm OK, but you're sweating quite a bit --
Mac [sweating profusely]: Pssh, nothing to worry about!
PC: Are you sure? You're pretty red --
Mac [flushed, dripping in sweat]: No no, just fine!
[A small flame eminates from Mac's shoulder]
PC: Hey, watch out! Your shoulder's on fire --
Mac [fire spread across coat almost covering body]: Trust me, this is perfectly normal; i'm fine!
PC: I'm gong to get a fire extinguish --
Mac [skin starting to burn and melt off]: WEll, maybe a glass of ice water if you could--
[Mac explodes into a giant fireball]

... well you get the idea. Some one should make it!

"So the Mac's market share is tiny. Is that your best retaliation against the effing Mac ads?"

No. It isn't. But I've been trying to be "Nice" Rory instead of "Mean" Rory. I've generally been trying to be nice, but it doesn't seem to have worked out that well.

It also doesn't feel natural. Maybe I'll go the Apple route and turn back into the bastard I used to be.

"I think they're fun."

That's your best retaliation against my comic? To like a stupid ad?

They're effing retarded, yo. They make me embarrassed to be a Mac owner. In spite of my status as an employee of MS, I've still spent about $10,000 on Macs over the past several years, and these ads have actually strongly negatively impacted my capitalist-driven consumer joy.

The ads aren't witty. They aren't clever. They aren't creative. If they are in any way representative of the thinking that's going on deep inside the bowels of Cupertino, then I want nothing to do with it.

It's just Apple throwing its own feces at the other side of the fence, and it's ridiculous.

They should just stick to making good products that break down and cost an arm and a leg to repair (which is always fun - getting to visit the "genius" bar at the Apple store where the guy with the 110 IQ punches a few buttons on an iMac and tells you that it's going to cost you twice what you paid for your computer to fix it).

It's embarrassing when people from my company slam the competition, and it's just as embarrassing when the competition does it.

Especially when it's done so poorly.

But, with such a small market share, I suppose they have to be careful with their marketing budget, eh?

:)

I've seen exactly 2 retorts on YouTube to the Mac ads which I thought summed it up perfectly.

Neo-Fight.tv has three which are quite funny-ish. (I liked the tablet PC one. But in retrospect it's not as funny as I originally thought.)

But I can't find the really funny one about playing games, which essentially goes.

Mac: "I'm a Mac"
PC: "And I'm a PC"
Mac: "What are you doing?"
PC: "Playing a Game."
Mac: "I can play games."
PC: "Photoshop isn't a game."
Mac: "Oh..."

Which does skip over the existance of a couple of games for Macs, but bleh.

It's all a shame, because the engineering team at Apple are awesome, I like the products - I just hate the advertising.

But I guess every company has its Achilles heel, at MS it seems to be the license-writing department.

You nailed it.  They're hardly '1984' are they?  Jesus, Ridley Scott would be spinning in his grave.  If he were dead.

I guess so, if by 'awesome' you mean HORRID ABYSSMAL ATROCIOUS TERRIBLE F'N SONSOBEYOTCHES TOOLS.

Let me give you the Coles-Notes version of my Mac story:

Background

D'Arcy: .NET developer, lover of Steve Ballmer, and Windows mouth piece for many years; needs a new PC, wife really likes Mac's, decides to purchase 20" iMac

And now the events...

Bought Mac from Apple online store, upgraded video card from 128MB to 256MB which also upgraded my shipping time from 1 - 2 days to 7 - 14 days; shipped at higher end of that scale.

Mac began giving whitescreenofdeath first night. Taken to shop next day after talking to Tech Support.

New Logic Board replace (Logic Board = motherboard, processor, and video card...basically, y'know, EVERYTHING).

Takes approx 1 week to get in and fix.

Hard drive is also discovered to be pooched.

Takes approx 2 weeks to get a WD 250 Gig HD in...because it needs to have the Apple logo on it (luckily the Mac repair shop I go to is awesome and they gave me a loaner hard drive).

Hard drive is replaced, D'Arcy goes home, villagers dance.

At home, iMac fans are blowing on high non stop.

Back to the shop the iMac goes where its discovered the heat sensor on the logic board is now bunk and needs to be replaced.

Conclusion

I think Bono should change the song to "Lemon, they sent me a Lemon..." because my Mac experience has been far less than stellar. I think the operating system is very nice, and I'm definately enjoying using my very expensive ITunes machine and using Firefox as my browser since Safari is the most unstable POS ever. The only bright spot so far has been that World of Warcraft runs and looks AMAZING on it, and the overall design of having it in one piece is very nice. But seriously...they have alot of manufacturing issues to deal with (and WTF, you put two USB ports on the keyboard, but neither provide enough juice to recharge an iPod Shuffle battery?!)

Wow...I think I just wrote a blog entry on Rory's blog...

Well, I was talking mainly about the software engineering team. But nobody's perfect.

The one thing I do think about Macs is that they're surprisingly traditional in their view of what a computer is and does. The only reason I don't have a Mac is that you don't get Mac Media Centre, or Tablet versions (Oh, actually the real reason is you can't play <insert game here> on a Mac, but I like to pretend I'm a reasonably serious person.)

They managed to innovate with the iPod (hey, let's take a Walkman and stick a hard-disk in it!) but that's the most wild and creative thing I've seen them do.

I suppose Apple aren't about innovation, they're about polish - just don't quote me on that. (And not the Polish they're different.)

OK, well maybe 60/40...

Rory,

For those of us who are technologically challenged, could you please elaborate on the pros and cons of Mac vs. PC?  For someone like me, a computer is a computer is a computer.  Some are faster, some have more "features" that never get used, etc etc.....

i have a feeling this whole mac-vs-pc / pc-vs-mac thing is going to go on for a long time and i hope so.  if you think about it, each one needs the other to be the bad guy, and just basically do things differently.  so the pcs should always have weaknesses that the mac can address, and vice-versa.  it's what makes both of them better.

too bad we can't do that with the major political parties--but that's for another blog...

Mac vs PC is one of those classic religious wars.  In the end both sides have their zealots.  Given my perception of Rory as free-loving hippie I figured he'd be more for the Mac than the PC.  Frankly, I don't see why it's impossible to like both.  It's like if I had kids and one of them was *way* better looking than the other - I'd still love them equally...well, in theory.

The best thing about these ads is the fact that the actor who plays the "Mac guy" has been accosed in the street, people coming up to him and yelling "HEY MAN YOU THINK YOU'RE SO COOL?"  Like... it's an ad.

Macs are fine, so are PCs.  Seriously folks, this is as stupid as Christianity vs Islam or emo vs. goth.

Apple didn't come up with that idea: I believe the Creative Nomad did it before the iPod (I had one, too - it was bigger than a CD player and have about 2 hours play time ;)

Actually, it's MS' enterprise customers we can thank for that... Microsoft has been publishing critial updates and patches since the days of Windows 98 and NT. The only thing that's changed is how they schedule and push those patches. ;-)
