My New Blog

I finally went and did it.

Before I explain what I did, let me advance a little offer for anyone who might be interested.

I've been running Neopoleon on the Community Server platform for some time now, but I haven't really taken full advantage of that. For those of you who don't know, the software allows me to host, like, a bajillion blogs. Right now, I'm only hosting...

...two.

So, if you like Neopoleon, and if you'd like to get a start blogging, and if you'd like to do it here, then let me know - we can chat about it and see if it'd be a good fit.

Anyway, back to this "My New Blog" business.

Over the past several years, my main blog has gone from being a tech blog to something almost entirely personal. With that change, my audience has changed as well. It seems like most of the people who come here are perfectly happy reading some guy's personal blog.

But, I missed tech blogging. I haven't been doing it, though, because I didn't want to mix the tech with the personal stuff. It'd just confuse everybody in the end. The techies would be complaining that I was writing too many stories about some girl, while the "personal" people would be complaining that they don't know what in the hell a "SQL Server" is or why they should care.

So, I've created a second blog here at Neopoleon. It's my tech blog. I'm getting back into tech blogging.

You can get an idea of what kind of stuff I'll be writing about if you head over to this blog's home page and check out the category list on the right.

All Neopoleon posts will be aggregated to the main landing page, while the two blogs each have their own spots (if you don't want it all - if you just want tech stuff or if you just want personal stuff).

Here's the URL to my personal blog: http://neopoleon.com/home/blogs/neo

And the URL to the tech blog: http://neopoleon.com/home/blogs/tech

Each blog has its own RSS feed to which you can subscribe (if that's your kind of thing).

If you would like to get everything through a feed, then just use the one that's on the main Neopoleon page.

Confused? Hope not.

In short:

For both blogs: http://neopoleon.com

For personal blog: http://neopoleon.com/home/blogs/neo

For tech blog: http://neopoleon.com/home/blogs/tech

With that out of the way, expect to see a mix of personal and technical content on the main page from here on out, and remember that, if you don't want to see both blogs, you don't have to - just navigate to each blog's home page. I'll be updating the Neopoleon landing page to make this clearer.

And now, back to it...

Cool.  I like the current blog, but I'm also a big fan of tech talk.

Same.

I don't know why I didn't think of this a lot sooner.

I mean, I have this software that lets me have as many blogs as I bloody well want, so... why limit myself?

I'm going to work this weekend on cleaning up the appearances as well. I like how the Neopoleon landing page looks, but I hate the way the blogs look. There are some slight differences, and they drive me nuts.

My sister's also on the job, redesigning everything from the ground up (learning how to do CS themes), but she also has a day job, so I can't expect her to just finish over night.

Even if that's what I really want.

Her designs are *really* good. Check out this early concept prototype for Neopleon:

http://neopoleon.com/test/index.html

She did it a long time ago - just for kicks - and now she's working on actually mapping all that stuff to CS.

Sweet, no?

That is nice stuff!

Non-denominational Gift Giving Day is coming up soon... this is my favorite book on CSS [1], if your sister really takes to CSS it might be something to stuff her stocking with.

Thanks for the kudos on the redesign effort.

As for the book/stocking stuffer recommendation, I actually went to my favorite bookstore today looking specifically for _CSS Mastery_ (this was before I read your post!). They didn't have it in stock, so I'm planning to try again tomorrow at another bookstore.

Unfortunately, Rory will have to think of another xmas gift since I really want that book *now*.

Blogging is damn cool. I've been doing it actively for a couple of months now - after being inspired largely by your blog. I started my blog just talking about my days at work, etc. But now it's developed into a screencast website. I just uploaded my 10th screencast, and have created a forum to accompany my viewers. I went from ~30 unique hits a month, to just over 1,300 in November.

Thanks for the inspiration,

If you can't find the book coming soon to a store near you, as a last resort you can order it online and download a PDF version right away for around 20 bucks:

Yeah, I don't know what took you so long to think of it either, since your buddy (me), has been using this model since .Text was just a baby.

Now, all you need is a blog here for your music and it will be perfect.

Don -

It's funny you should bring this up - I was actually thinking of you when I decided to start the second blog.

I've thought often about the distributed Don, but, for some reason, hadn't taken the plunge myself.

I don't know why, either. I had some very specific reason for it before, but I've totally forgotten what it was.

And I'm glad I forgot, 'cause I'd like to be able to write both a tech *and* a personal blog while making them easy to find, but also easy to read seperately.

Point being, you were part of the inspiration to do this :)

Glad to see you moving forward with this.

Maybe someday I'll come crawling on my knees, begging at the door to the Neopoleon manor to please, please let me write at this site.

Feeling a bit overextended with the whole XNA thing right now though, so I'll be holding off for a bit and come begging later.

Hey Rory,

I actually liked just the one blog... You used to sprinkle technical posts in there every now and then, and you'd just categorize it appropriately, and I was ok with that. I think you should keep it that way, unless you plan on aggregating both blogs into one. I dont know why I'm looking in to this as much as I am. I dont think I know what I'm saying.

Anyhow, I miss you man. toodles,

The problem is that I want to do a lot more technical writing, but I don't want to have to expose *everybody* to it. I have a lot of non-tech readers now, and they couldn't care less about things like SQL Server and XNA.

To the people who want both blogs, nothing will seem to have changed. The main feed (you can find it from the home page at neopoleon.com/home/default.aspx) will continue to spit out everything I write here. But, if someone just wants my personal stuff - or just my tech stuff - that person has the option of readin one without the other.

I think this is really the best way to go. And, like I said, for you, it won't be any different as long as you continue to either read the main aggregated feed or just land on my home page.

So *there*.
